The New Maen Manhattan 37mm Ultra-Thin, Smaller but with a Big Impact
A significant revision sees the integrated sports watch adopt the ultra-thin design and hand-wound movement of the Manhattan 39mm, but smaller.

Maen, a relatively young brand from Sweden with Dutch roots, has combined two of its popular Manhattan models into a compact and sleek 37mm integrated sports watch that highlights the best of both collections. Based on consumer demand, the current Manhattan 37mm automatic has been slimmed down with an ultra-thin case and hand-wound calibre like the Manhattan 39mm Ultra-Thin, offering a compact variant of the big brother with a fresh dial design, as well as an updated display. The familiar overall aesthetic remains intact for fans of the 1970s styling, but the sleeker redesign is sure to be a best seller.
As guessed by its name, the Manhattan 37mm Ultra-Thin comes in a 37mm polished and brushed stainless steel case, and has gone from 9.3mm in height with the automatic version to an ultra-thin 7.1mm, but lug-to-lug remains at 47mm. So, given the integrated design, it wears a bit larger on the wrist than the dimensions would suggest. Narrow but still versatile, it is definitely not a “diminutive” watch, and it can work on larger wrists (and there’s also the 39mm variant). The octagonal bezel emphasises the integrated watch vibe of the 1970s and has a brushed front with polished bevels.
An anti-reflective sapphire crystal protects the dial and there’s a screwed sapphire exhibition case back displaying the decorated hand-wound calibre. The crown is signed with an embossed logo and water resistance is rated at 100 metres, so it’s safe for a dive in the pool. The three-link, 22mm integrated bracelet tapers to 16mm at the butterfly clasp with a nice, integrated logo.
Another important update, the new hammered style “Tuscan” dial is a standout feature with a cool 1970s vibe and perhaps some Royal Oak inspiration. This textured dial comes in four colours – blue, green, grey and salmon – and all have a nice, muted hue (nothing too loud). The automatic 37mm Manhattan has a date option at 3 o’clock and central seconds, the 39mm Ultra-Thin is a two-hander, and the new Manhattan 37mm Ultra-Thin features small seconds at 6 o’clock and no date. This is the first Manhattan model to have small seconds, which arguably gives it the most vintage look. The sub-dial follows the bezel’s octagonal shape with a detailed seconds track, while large applied indices at the perimeter have white lume and a simple, complementing minute track. The hour and minute hands have matching lume inserts and this collection would be right at home on a wrist 50 years ago.
Powering the Manhattan 37mm Ultra-Thin is an ETA Peseux 7001 hand-wound calibre. First produced in 1971 by Peseux, the 7001 has been made by ETA since 1985 (hence the ETA Peseux 7001 designation that endures today). This very slim 2.5mm movement is ideal for ultra-thin cases and has 17 jewels, beats at 21,600vph (3Hz) and comes with a 42-hour power reserve. Functions include central hours, minutes and sub-dial seconds, and it’s a true no-date movement. Maen uses an Elaboré grade variant that’s adjusted in three positions and decorated with Côtes de Genève and perlage.
The Maen Manhattan 37mm Ultra-Thin retails for EUR 1,079 (excl. VAT) with availability starting on June 23rd. Good quality, good size and mostly good looks. Quite a banger.
